PATINA is a culture magazine exploring the exchange of traditions and aesthetics between nations, with the Shining Japan issue highlighting how American subcultures evolve abroad. The issue’s main features focus on Japan’s adoption of rockabilly and the reimagining of Godzilla, tracing how global influences are reshaped over time. The visual system combines bold purples and reds with contrasting lime greens and yellows, reflecting the energy and cultural fusion at the heart of each story. Custom illustrations, experimental typography, and varied headline treatments give the layouts a vibrant, editorial edge that mirrors cultural diversity. Every spread was designed from the ground up, creating a cohesive yet eclectic reading experience that celebrates cultural reinvention.

Early thumbnails established the layout direction for the primary spread, The New Rockabilly, refined across several iterations before artwork creation. The secondary spread, Breaking Down Godzilla, underwent the same process, pairing a strong visual opener with its corresponding article spread.
